The influence of penal populism in the crisis of the Brazilian prison system

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the influence of penal populism in the worsening of the crisis in the prison system in Brazil, how its influence reflects on the national legislative production and how this reflects on the scenario of the Brazilian penal system. It is important to combat the growth of this cycle, where criminal populism through the media generates a sense of fear and social insecurity by exploiting criminal facts, selling the idea that the extremely punitive criminal is the best way to achieve justice and that prison is a preventive form of crime. Changes should be sought in this system, which lacks greater interests of justice and society as a whole so that the convict’s recovery is carried out through the use of instruments such as education and work in order to give him conditions to return to live in society, enforcing the criminal principles and human rights contained in the Federal Constitution of 1988. In view of the data that will be worked, the project will be bibliographic and documentary, using quantitative and qualitative techniques, using primary direct sources and secondary, research on electronic sites will also be used, looking for instruments available electronically in articles, as a way to enhance the present study.
