The presence of a dentistry professional in hospital environments, especially
in Intensive Care Units - ICU, is essential in order to reduce the risk of infections,
especially in patients who require monitoring and care, including oral hygiene. Such
care is responsible for preventing the proliferation of biofilms with pathogens that can
cause Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia – VAP, which consists of an infection acquired
after orotracheal intubation, and can develop in approximately 48 (forty-eight) to 72
(seventy-two ) hours after the patient is subjected to mechanical ventilation. This
infection can lead to death and, as a result, is greatly feared in intensive care units.
The present study aimed to indicate the importance of the presence of the dental
surgeon in these units as an effective member, with the purpose of preventing the
incidence of VAP, which will occur through improved care for hospitalized patients.
Among the articles found using these terms, those with the greatest relevance to the
topic of this research were selected, which was determined by reading the respective
abstracts. It is concluded that the daily presence of the dentist from the dentistry team
is necessary hospital in the ICU, as this professional evaluates patients in the first 24
hours of admission to intensive care.
