This study examined the integration of Orthodontics into the Brazilian SUS,
emphasizing its significance in promoting oral health and the overall well-being of
patients. Orthodontics emerges as a vital specialty, not solely for aesthetic reasons but
also due to its implications for public health, given its prevalence and impact on quality
of life. Despite the advancements represented by PNSB and the establishment of CEO,
challenges persist in accessing public orthodontic treatment. The inclusion of these
procedures in the secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare, endorsed by the
Ministério da Saúde, marks an important step. However, continual evaluation of the
efficiency of these services and the pursuit of enhancements are crucial. Furthermore,
it is essential to recognize that access to orthodontic treatment extends beyond oral
health, encompassing broader implications for the general well-being of the population,
including individual self-esteem and societal presentation. Therefore, sustaining
research activities, fostering collaboration among administrators and healthcare
professionals, and implementing effective strategies are fundamental to promoting
equity in access to orthodontic care (and other dental specialties), thereby advancing
towards a more equitable, egalitarian, and consequently, healthier society.
