Synopsis

Waterproofing products are intended to protect the surface to which they are applied. They are presented in the civil construction market for different qualities, and chosen for the type of humidity that potentiates infiltrations of the construction, since the waterproofing service is the prevention of the other stages. Based on the high rate of association of pathologies to the waterproofing system of buildings, the work arises with the objective of discussing and raising awareness about preventing steps, investigating the importance of waterproofing. In this context, we sought to verify whether it is more advantageous to carry out a waterproofing project in the construction of the work or to correct eventual pathologies resulting from infiltrations. For that, a bibliographic review was carried out on waterproofing buildings, on the sources of moisture, on the pathologies resulting from infiltrations, and a case study in the city of Contagem, Minas Gerais, in order to find the answer to the research problem. For the case study, a building of approximately 40 years of age was chosen, built without the use of waterproofing methods. The pathologies presented in the studied place as a result of the infiltrations were: vesicles, efflorescence, mold and mold on the wall coverings. It was verified that the problem hypothesis was true, that it is more advantageous to prevent infiltrations through waterproofing methods, than to correct the pathologies resulting from infiltrations. and there is also the problem that these corrections must be made in already inhabited households.
