The Importance of Oral Health Education for the Elderly

Population aging brings significant challenges to the oral health of the elderly, with direct impacts on
their quality of life. This article aims to analyze the importance of oral health education for the elderly
population, highlighting how this practice can improve general well-being, prevent oral diseases and
promote healthy aging. The research was carried out through a literature review, based on scientific
articles, books and official documents. The analysis revealed that problems such as edentulism,
xerostomia and periodontal diseases are prevalent among the elderly, affecting their functional, social
and emotional capacity. Oral health education is essential to enable this population to adopt preventive
habits and improve self-care, contributing to a better quality of life. It is concluded that educational
strategies, combined with effective public policies, are essential to promote Dentistry focused on the
integral well-being of the elderly.
